Propagandhi from Manitoba, Canada, are back with their new single "Cat Guy," raising even more excitement for their album "At Peace," out May 2nd via Epitaph!
The Canadian quartet is as sharp as ever in this song, dripping with wit and criticism, with breakneck riffs and subversive lyricism—with a grin and a growl. "Cat Guy" is the second single from the upcoming album, following the title track "At Peace."
A tribute to social identity with a twist: "From my songwriting perspective, two things I was thinking about were capturing a bit of Judas Priest's Firepower LP while evoking a sense of SNFU's Chi-Pig writing the lyrics," laughs frontman Chris Hannah.
In true Propagandhi fashion, "At Peace" is intelligent music for dangerous times. The ever-evolving flag-bearers of politically charged punk have been actively fighting against musical boundaries and bro-punk conservatism since 1986, spreading an anti-fascist message. With their DNA of heavy riffs, hardcore ethos, and radical consciousness, their stance remains explosive.
Pre-save "At Peace" here.
"Everything I sing about still comes from the same person who wrote and sang on our first record, 'How to Clean Everything,' back in 1993," Hannah recalls the band's scathing skate-thrash origins. "But what we put into the songs now probably reflects more despair than it did 30 years ago, when we had similar perspectives, but with strands of hope and naivety. Now it's about the existential angst of living a life worth living in this completely failed society."
It's undeniable that on their first album in eight years, their social activism has given way to a deeper sense of reflection. Almost a decade later, the members of Propagandhi have a lot on their minds. "We're definitely not a band that responds well to someone telling us we have to put something out," the frontman continues. "That happens when we have something to talk about—and now is definitely the time."
"At Peace" is their first release since 2017's Victory Lap and was created during the threatening political climate in the months before Trump's rise to power. The album was created shortly before the American oligarch proposed making Propagandhi's homeland the 51st state of the USA and was then mixed in December 2024 at Blasting Room Studios by Jason Livermore (Rise Against, Hot Water Music). This collection of songs captures the anxieties and turmoil of the four band members and offers a poignant portrait of uncertainty.
At its core, however, "At Peace" is Propagandhi's plea for hope against hopelessness. "Twenty years ago, we felt things were fucked, but that there could be a mass mobilization of people against the oligarchy, the billionaire class," says Chris. "I don't think that exists in our music anymore, and I don't think there will be. I hope I'm proven wrong."
Propagandhi consists of singer Chris Hannah, drummer Jord Samolesky, bassist/co-vocalist Todd Kowalski and guitarist Sulynn Hago.
