Scowl drop new video for single "Special"

Bay Area hardcore band Scowl has signed to the venerable Dead Oceans label (home of Phoebe Bridgers, Mitski, Japanese Breakfast, etc.). To celebrate, they've released a new single, "Special," along with a video.

"Special" reveals a new level of depth and texture in Scowl's artistry, showcasing a band rooted in authenticity, combining innovative song structures with passionate, relatable lyrics.

They've always defied categorization, going far beyond what you'd expect from "hardcore." "Special" is no exception: the vocals exude confidence and transition seamlessly into fierce screams, growls, and snarls, while the track's instrumentation continues to reveal new layers, offering more of its urgent, driving sound with each listen. Produced by Grammy-nominated Will Yip (who also worked on the band's "Psychic Dance Routine" EP) and mixed by Rich Costey (Fiona Apple, Deftones, Vampire Weekend), "Special" has big-arena rock appeal without losing Scowl's raw intensity.

If pop and hardcore were to unite, "Special" would be their rebellious offspring.

Singer Kat Moss shares her thoughts on the single:

"Originally Malachi sent in the demo while we were touring in the UK. Cole added his drums, Bailey directed the bridge, and Mikey ended up cooking his leads. "Special" is a kamikaze song. The lyrics are about threatening the audience by asking "What do you really want?" in clear desperation to answer my own question: "What do I really want?" But the answer is simple: "I want to feel alive."

Scowl has quickly established itself as one of the most dynamic and hard-working acts in rock. They have toured extensively in the US and internationally with bands such as Limp Bizkit, Destroy Boys, The Bronx, Militarie Gun, Show Me The Body, Zulu, Touché Amoré, A Day To Remember, Speed, Sunami and many others, and performed at festivals such as Coachella, Reading & Leeds, No Values, Outbreak, Primavera and Sick New World, to name a few.

The band - Malachi Greene (guitar), Bailey Lupo (bass), Cole Gilbert (drums), Mikey Bifolco (guitar) and Kat Moss (vocals) - burst onto the scene in 2021 with their debut album, "How Flowers Grow," and have been on an unstoppable rise ever since. With 2023's "Psychic Dance Routine," Scowl pushed the boundaries of punk, blending aggressive hardcore with lush alternative melodies. They made music they wanted to hear, and the world took notice. Now, with "Special," Scowl are setting the stage to make 2025 theirs.
