Live Coverage || Terror, Dying Wish, Eden Demise @ Arch Live Club (8/4/2024)

On April 8th, LA hardcore trailblazers Terror returned to Athens after 12 years. The band was accompanied by Dying Wish and Eden Demise.

Having spent the previous few days being ill, and consequently missing a couple other shows I wanted to attend during that time, I was a little apprehensive about going out that evening. In the end, however, my FOMO won; I hadn't seen Terror play a club show since before the pandemic and the set at Summer Breeze last August, despite being at noon and under the scorching sun, was incendiary, so I gingerly made my way downtown.

Doors opened with a slight delay, which pushed the show a little back too. Up first was Eden Demise. The prolific band got straight to business, even getting some people moshing in the front. They will be releasing their new album in the coming weeks so as expected, the setlist featured new material as well. Veterans in their scene, they didn't let some technical difficulties bring them down, and continued their relentless pummeling, choosing to end the set with their latest single, "Slingshot".

Up next was Dying Wish. Despite this being their first show in Athens ever, as soon as they stepped on stage they caused mayhem. A lot of the attendees had been eagerly waiting to see the Portland quintet since the show was announced and the band most certainly didn't disappoint. Their performance was nothing short of explosive; the band was tight, jumping and headbanging, fully present in the moment. I heard some comments that vocalist Emma Boster sounded a little tired but I disagree. Granted, the sound didn't always do them justice but it certainly didn't affect the passion the band was showcasing. This energy was contagious, with moshers punching everyone in their way, and occasionally taking the mic. I really hope they come back sooner than later for a headlining show.

Time had come for Terror to demolish the packed venue. And how would they not? They got on with "One With The Underdogs", "Spit My Rage", "Stick Tight" and "Hard Lessons"; need I describe the absolute madness that ensued? Terror takes pride in the intensity of their live shows, as they themselves embody the very essence of hardcore music. Vocalist Scott Vogel spoke about unity in the scene, constantly inviting people to join him at the front or on stage. The setlist balanced between new and older material, strategically bringing the focus on the fan-favorite pit hits ("Return To Strength", "Pain Into Power", "Overcome", "Always The hard Way"). The 40-minute set ended with "Keep Your Mouth Shut", where dozens of fans stormed the stage, and "Keepers Of The Faith" which made the venue resounding with our voices.

I've been saying it for years and I will say it once more; Terror is the best live band out there. I haven't been this beaten at a show since The Sound Of Revolution in 2017 (iykyk) and, honestly, it was worth it. My only complaint about the show was the lack of ventilation, which made the heat in the venue overwhelming. Overall, Terror's return to Athens was a triumphant celebration of hardcore music, where people of all scenes and ages came together for an evening of friendly violent fun. I sincerely hope that they too will be back soon.
