"Goth crooner" (New York Times) Chelsea Wolfe releases "Everything Turns Blue", the final precursor to her new album "She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She", due out February 9, 2024 on Loma Vista Recordings (Universal) appears. “Everything Turns Blue” follows previously released singles “Dusk,” “Whispers in the Echo Chamber” and “Tunnel Lights.”
On "Everything Turns Blue," Wolfe asks a question central to She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She: "What do I have to do to heal you out of me?" "I've been living without you here/and it's alright/I'd been looking for a way out a long time/I've been living without you here and I can fight/I've been living softly my whole life" , she sings. In keeping with the upcoming album's themes, the production on "Everything Turns Blue" is deep, smoky, cavernous and glitchy. Wolfe's voice is raw, honest and carries a weight that exudes the feeling of burnout and healing. This slow-burning single is an anthem about "finding yourself after being part of something toxic for a long time." Wolfe continues: "Breaking up with someone after 10 years, 20 years, 30 years - there's going to be some ups and downs as you start to process it all." It's a leap into the unknown.
This leap into the unknown should come as no surprise; Wolfe has never been afraid to experiment, transcend genres or invent her own hybrids. If you listen to their debut album "The Grime and the Glow" from 2010 again, you can already see the prototypical skeleton between the spatial sound atmosphere, punk drums, dark melodies and Wolfe's confident voice. A visionary notepad for what would follow. On "She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She" there are references to the removal of exoskeletons, excommunication and permanent ruptures. The border area, the in-between and the invisible are recurring figures. As Wolfe puts it: "Like the dark moon, this empty space can feel unpredictable and threatening, but it also holds so much potential, mystery and excitement.
At its core, “She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She” is about the realization that the path forward is a passage. About considering what needs to be cut off and left behind, while also figuring out what lies ahead and what there is to discover once you get there. Wolfe accompanies us on this search and asks us these questions while asking herself the same ones. As the album's title suggests, "She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She" is a reminder to look within and remember that all the strength you need lies there. "Reach out to the selves, reach out to one other. Reach to the ancient and to the end of all things, to remember that the only time we truly have is now."
