It takes a lot of restrain not to kick this off with the phrase "the time is nigh and Full Force is coming our way with full force". Bad puns aside, Full Force festival is right around the corner and it would be impossible to leave it out of our pilgrimage series. For those new here, these guides are designed to help festival goers navigate big lineups and running order clashes by suggesting 10 essential bands they shouldn't miss.
Traditionally the festival takes place on the same weekend as Vainstream Rockfest and Jera On Air, so we are always cheekily able to tell if bands playing one festival are playing on the rest as well. Now, it is true that Full Force leans more on the metal side than the other two, a thing we will never object to, and still manages to keep a great balance with modern -core, therefore satisfying all tastes at once, which is never an easy task.
01. Wargasm
The Brits have made a name for themselves for their explosive performances and no-fucks-given attitude. Bringing new breath to the meaning of punk, these kids are going to break big.
When: Sunday, 14:15-15:00
Where: Hardbowl stage
02. Caliban
The German metalcore masters are playing in their homeland so be prepared for a god damn battle. One of the seminal bands in the European scene, Caliban are revered for laying the foundations for the sound we recognize today. They've gone through countless transformations and at this point of their career, they are more mature and solid than ever.
When: Friday, 18:30-19:15
Where: Mainstage
03. While She Sleeps
One of the funnest live bands of our time. Whether it's guitarists Sean Long and Mat Welsh jumping up and down or vocalist Loz Taylor jumping off of things, the metalcore outfit form Sheffield have grown to be the voice of their generation -and quite rightly if you ask us. Apart from their entertaining show, their revolutionary attitude conveys a powerful message as they call for unity and understanding, and aim to cerate a safe space for anyone struggling.
When: Saturday, 20:10-21:00
Where: Main stage
04. Gaerea
You probably saw that coming. The Portugese black metallers dropped a phenomenal album last year, and after a couple encounters we can say we're hooked with their captivating show. Their imposing stage presence is further enhanced by the vocalist doing a "danse de macabre" of sorts, with smooth movements that juxtapose the ferocity of the music, as he's exorcising his demons. Plus that "we are Gaerea" growl is chilling.
When: Sunday, 16:45-17:30
Where: Medusa stage
05. Terror
You can ask anyone in our team, metalhead or punk, what they think of Terror's live show and the answer will be a unanimous "bloody terrific". The band is revered in the hardcore scene because of their no0fucks-given attitude and refusal to compromise their sound, values and integrity in order to attract new audiences. A testament to that are the past couple of releases, which are angrier even than their first material, over 20 years ago. With a headlining slot on the Hardbowl stage, they're a must-see, for sure.
When: Friday, 22:50-23:40
Where: Hardbowl stage
06. Guilt Trip
While we're in the subject of killer live bands, Guilt Trip is also deservedly in this list. The Manchester noisemakers have made a name for themselves with their incendiary shows and their ability to turn regular moshers or mere bystanders into crowdkillers.
When: Saturday, 18:15-19:00
Where: Backyard stage
07. Celeste
Celeste is a band we've been following for ages. The French post/black metal band has mastered the creation of dark and expressive music, engulfing the listener in chagrined emotions. Their latest album, "Assassine(s)", worked incredibly well taking Celeste's music to the next level without compromising their distinctive identity in the process, and the combination of those songs with the older, fan-favorite material, is simply mesmerizing.
When: Friday, 21:35-22:20
Where: Backyard stage
08. Stray From The Path
If you need a new revolutionary band to get addicted to, look no further. The Long Island outfit has been making a buzz for themselves for years. Their Rage Against the Machine-infused hardcore, combined with their message against bigotry of any kind, has made them stand out in a long list of political bands, mainly due to their consistency. Always vocal about social injustices, they have established a very strong relationship with their fans, who are always eager to demonstrate their empathy towards the less privileged and aversion to inhumane decisions.
When: Sunday, 15:00-15:45
Where: Mainstage
09. Harms Way
The pulverizing band from Chicago is no joke. We strongly disagree with their placement in the Saturday afternoon, since their fans are very likely to incapacitate whoever wants to enjoy the remaining day and a half but, honestly, we'd take the risk. It is true that for non-fans hardcore can be monotonous or repetitive, but Harm's Way combines metallic notions and even industrial nuances in their sound, resulting in a thunderous beatdown hardcore that becomes more and more engaging for anyone witnessing it.
When: Saturday, 16:30-17:15
Where: Hardbowl stage
10. Ways Away
You may not know this Californian supergroup, but you definitely know where the members come from; Stick To Your Guns, The Hope Conspiracy, Boysetsfire, Samiam. And while these bands all have very distinguished heavy sounds, Ways Away strays from that path (pun intended) and serves inspired punk rock melodies with very personal lyrics. Besides, it's no secret that singer Jesse Barnett has the voice of an angel, adding extra points of awesomeness to the performance.
When: Sunday, 14:45-15:30
Where: Backyard stage
Full Force festival is taking place on June 23-25.
