Julie Christmas, Undeath, Kurokuma and more confirmed for Damnation festival 2023

With Manchester's Damnation Festival reaching ticket milestone after milestone, the best way to sell the event out one more time is to continue bringing quality artists into an already rich lineup.

That being said, New York noise rock queen, Julie Christmas, will perform a UK exclusive show at this year's Damnation. The one-off set is the band's only planned European outing for the remainder of 2023. Fans can expect an eclectic mix of new and old solo material as well as Made Out of Babies and Battle of Mice gems during the main stage performance at BEC Arena, Manchester, on Saturday, November 4.

Meanwhile, US death metal standouts, Undeath , have also been added to the line-up for their Damnation debut. They said: "Damnation has been a fest that we’ve wanted to play since we started Undeath a few years ago, so it feels surreal that we finally get a chance to tear it up with y’all in Manchester this fall. We can’t wait."

Also making their long-awaited Damnation debut are Sheffield psychedelic sludge trio, Kurokuma. They said: "It's time. The primordial force known as Kurokuma are proud to finally unleash our mind-melting brand of savagely transcendental metal upon the hordes of Damnation."

Organiser Gavin McInally added: "For many fans, myself included, having Julie Christmas perform Mariner with Cult of Luna in 2016 was a top tier Damnation moment. To have her back with new music and the prospect of 'The Bad Wife', Made Out of Babies and Battle of Mice classics, is a genuine privilege. If you missed that Mariner set seven years ago and have kicked yourself ever since, don't make the same mistake this year."

He added: "Undeath tore through the UK on a blistering sold-out tour earlier this year and it's going to be something special to see them lay waste to BEC Arena in similar fashion. While Kurokuma have been on our radar for what feels like forever, so it's fitting to finally offer their unique blend of hypnotising sludge a home at Damnation."

Due to a diary clash, Heriot have moved from Damnation to A Night of Salvation, switching with Ohhms, who will now play Damnation.

And speaking of A Night Of Salvation, more acts have been confirmed for the Damnation opening event.

UK death metal standouts Celestial Sanctuary were the first name announced for the Church Road Records Stage at Damnation's Night of Salvation event. They'll join the likes of Enslaved, Akercocke, Sigh, Deadguy and Bossk at BEC Arena, Manchester, on Friday, November 3.

Sammy of Church Road Records, said: "Over the last couple of years Celestial Sanctuary have been one of the shining lights in the UK death metal scene. Seeing them grow from their first bedroom based demo tape, right up to selling out headline shows and supporting death metal royalty like Obituary has been a trip, and this is only the beginning. The New Wave of British Death Metal is here to stay!"

UK stoner riff heroes Tuska will perform their stunning debut album, "Matriarch", in full at the event. They join label mates Celestial Sanctuary on the Church Road Records Stage.

Justine, of Church Road Records, said: "A two-piece that sounds like a 10-piece, this duo have been making a name for themselves with their dark brooding doom and relentlessly riff-heavy songs. Their latest album "Matriarch" is a must listen for any fan of the riff!"

Rising UK thrashers Inhuman Nature will also join a stunning Church Road Records Stage line-up

Sammy, of Church Road Records, said: "The pure ballistic energy that Inhuman Nature possesses is matched only by the intensity of their live show. As soon as the band plays the first note of their set you will feel compelled to bang your head and to thrash like a beast. Get your battle jacket and prepare for war!"

Last but not least, enigmatic UK black outfit The Sun's Journey Through The Night are the fifth and final Church Road Records offering for Damnation's Night of Salvation event. They join recently announced Tuskar, Inhuman Nature, Ohhms and Celestial Sanctuary, although will open the black metal focused Cult Never Dies Stage at BEC Arena, Manchester, on Friday, November 3.

Reformed US metalcore pioneers Deadguy will be the special guest headliner of the Church Road Records Stage. Label chief Sammy, said: "The music created by the elusive 'No One' grows more intriguing with each release, as does the persona surrounding this shadowy figure. The Sun's Journey Through The Night have only been in existence since 2019 but have already released a string of releases that many believe to be seminal in the burgeoning black metal scene. Hail No One."
