Singer Tom Weaver about the song:
"'Great Grief' is very special to the five of us. It was the first piece of music we wrote together after deciding we wanted to do it again, and it felt like an organic progression when it was written came together.
Musically, we wanted to stay grounded in the familiar but challenge ourselves to produce a more mature and expansive sound. We put a lot of thought into the sound design, adding layers and harmonies - all things we hadn't put much emphasis on before.
Lyrically, the song is about the realization I came to after reflecting on our time as a band after we broke up. When we announced we were disbanding Casey, I thought about the immediate personal impact of my writing and how it felt like I was adding to my pain by repeating it nightly. But now I'm much better and I've improved a lot over the past few years. Now, as I look at how Casey's music has been interpreted and applied by our fans, my own uneasiness seems like a small price to pay for the collective joy and catharsis we've felt in our community."
At its core, Casey was based on the idea that music is a work of love. With no expectation of success, no desire to be famous, only a shared desire to make music - and when the feeling was no longer right, Casey stayed true to himself and resigned.
When Casey announced they were breaking up the band in late 2018, it felt like a premature end. With their first two LPs - 2016's Love Is Not Enough and 2018's Where I Go When I Am Sleeping - the Welsh five-piece had firmly established themselves as one of the most exciting bands on the British alternative scene.
Now, four long years later, the band is back.
"Great Grief" is the first song to emerge from Casey's resurrection, a delightfully sombre track in which the band further expands on the layered soundscapes that underpinned the songs on Where I Go When I Am Sleeping. Broken, bruised and bleeding, yet shimmering with beautiful defiance.
In keeping with Casey, the band's open hearts ooze with the same kind of pain and trauma that defined them from the start. Casey don't just reproduce the feelings that inspire them - they embody them.
