Brutus reveals new single, "What Have We Done"

Belgian trio Brutus today present their new single "What Have We Done". The single will be released shortly before the release of their third studio album "Unison Life" (Hassle Records / Sargent House) on October 21st, which they will headline next month -Tour of Great Britain will accompany.

"What Have We Done" represents Brutus at their peak. Ever evolving, the song grows from the plaintive elegance of the first verse to the climax of catharsis as the post-rock guitars surface. Fueled by vulnerability sung by Stefanie's voice, the lyrics capture the struggle of being trapped in these self-destructive patterns of repeated behavior: "Once more we sing along, to this never-ending song, once more we carry on the pain, what have we done."

Vocalist and drummer Stefanie says: "'What Have We Done' started with just the guitar, the Moog synth (playing the bass line) and a stanza of the lyrics. But we felt like this was something special that we made the Had to take time to get it right. As we continued to work on this song, there was this unspoken pressure to go further musically, dig deeper, and go the extra mile to finish the track."

For some reason this new piece of music felt like both a turning point and a crossroads. In our band's history, this feeling has only existed a few times before, with the songs 'Bearclaws', 'Justice de Julia II' and 'War'. Key songs like these are challenging but at the same time feel like a homecoming. They define who you are as a band."

The song embodies what was happening at the time of writing, in the midst of the pandemic. It's about suffering too long and you've had enough. The verse reflects the shared feeling we, as humans, sometimes have when too much is going on in our heads and we get stuck in the same loop."

The accompanying video for the song features footage from two of the band's favorite festivals, Rock Herk and Lokerse Feesten, and the phenomenal crowd reaction stands out in the footage. It was filmed and edited by Jonas Hollevoet.

The album "Unison Life", recently introduced with the songs "Victoria", "Liar" and "Dust", explores the idea of striving for a life of contentment - but knowing that the biggest obstacle is there to be held back by one's own shortcomings. Musically though, it's very focused and the band strives to surpass their potential. From playing with new ideas, to persistently perfecting stronger tunes, to experimenting with a plethora of new gadgets bought online, they've set themselves the highest standards. Their dedication paid off as "Unison Life" became the purest expression of the Brutus sound yet.

'Unison Life' is available to pre-order or pre-save HERE.
