Pirate metal heroes Alestorm performed in Athens on July 12. I've never been able to catch them play in the past and it's safe to say that, since it was announced, it was the show I was really looking forward to.
At exactly 22:00, the Scottish pirates made their way to the stage under the frenzied cheering of fans, some of whom had also dressed up to match the theme of the evening. The first row had pirate flags laying over the barrier and the crowd started raging from the first notes of "Keelhauled". By the time "Treasure Chest Party Quest" and "Mexico" resounded, most people were singing along loudly and throwing duck-shaped swimming rings over their heads. Alestorm seemed to be in excellent mood, goofing around (occasionally also bumping into the duck centerpiece) and showing off their craftmanship.
The setlist was very well calculated, including both older and new material, always keeping the party vibe going. With the venue quite full and people always eager to participate in the shenanigans, frontman Chris Bowes kept inviting us to enter the magic world of his storytelling. We traveled from the "Sunk'n Norwegian" to "Tortuga", where a crew member dressed as a shark contributed in the vocal performance, we woke up with a "Hangover" and then went straight to "1741" and the battle of Cartagena. The "P.A.R.T.Y." kept raging until Captain Morgan got his revenge. Alestorm kept the uber-favorite trinity ("Drink", "Pirate Metal Drinking Crew", "Fucked With An Anchor") for the encore and after about an hour and a half they said goodbye, promising that it wouldn't take them 15 years to come back this time. We most certainly hope so.
