Athens, Greece metalcore heroes MINDTHREAT have released the greatest sonic curveball of their career so far in the form of a new single. Known for taking nothing seriously except for their music, the quartet returns after a year of silence with a brand new song, titled “Whatever It’s Called”, and an accompanying video.
2022 finds MINDTHREAT spread all over Europe and the UK, gathering influences and experiences, and continuing the exploration of a new era which started with the release of several standalone singles/videos the year prior, all amassing over 100K views in total on YouTube. For “Whatever It’s Called”, the band reveals a more fun and previously unseen dimension, both visually and sonically.
Initially conceived for a short-lived academic project, the track draws heavily from the modern -core scene and also features some very interesting electronic twists and turns, groovy riffage and big contagious hooks. At the same time, the whimsical title balances between an homage to old-school metalcore and plain trolling, with the band refusing to reveal the true meaning behind it. And while the experiment was fun, to say the least, it was also a learning experience; being avid supporters of the DIY mentality, the members combined their collective know-how and skillset on every step of the process to bring life to the project and give the song a true MINDTHREAT identity.
For the first time in their career the quartet had complete creative control over the outcome, including producing and mixing the song, and scripting, filming and directing the video. “We are very happy with the end result”, MINDTHREAT comments. “’Whatever It’s Called’ was a fun project that greatly differs from anything we’ve done so far on many levels. Getting to experiment with so many varying elements was both an interesting and challenging experience”.
ABOUT MINDTHREAT
MINDTHREAT is a metalcore band hailing from Athens, Greece. Founded by high school friends in March of 2011, the band has been one of the fastest-rising acts in the Athenian scene. Early on in their career, MINDTHREAT secured a slot to perform at the prestigious Wacken Open Air festival in 2012. That moment was crucial for the band, who then began building an international audience, all while maintaining their trailblazer status in their local scene.
MINDTHREAT has been in a fortunate position to boast a steady lineup since early 2013, which has been a key element to their success. The members’ unquestionable chemistry, sealed with the addition of vocalist Anton Mess the year before, became their vehicle of expression. Advocating quality over quantity, MINDTHREAT’s early releases were very limited. It wasn’t until 2018, after signing with the German record label Bleeding Nose Records, that they released their debut full length album titled “Black Dreams”. The album cemented MINDTHREAT’s sound in the metalcore spectrum and allowed them to grow into an autonomous entity, able to further explore different nuances of the genre without limiting themselves to generic outlines. The skillset they developed was pivotal in their ever-present quest to push their artistic limits.
Their sound is defined by musicality. MINDTHREAT don’t believe in divine inspirations but on hard collective work instead. Seasoned songwriters with a vast knowledge in music, in the recent years they have achieved a new-found balance between their metalcore roots and captivating melodic hooks, all of which translate into incendiary live performances.
Among the countless shows they’ve played in their hometown, over the years the quartet has also participated in notable festivals, such as Total Metal Festival (2014), Rockstadt Extreme, Aggressive Music Festival and Carpathian Alliance (2015). Furthermore, they have multiple shows under their belts, both in Greece and abroad, sharing the stage with numerous international bands like Whitechapel, Oceans Ate Alaska, Deez Nuts and The Devil Wears Prada.
