Live Coverage || The Contortionist @ Musik & Frieden, 10/8/2019

Last weekend I was lucky to catch The Contortionist play at Musik&Frieden in Berlin and it was an absolute pleasure. They had support from a newer band called Azusa.

Azusa are a progressive extreme metal supergroup with two former Extol members and a member from The Dillinger Plan. They added pop vocalist Eleni Zafiriadou of Sea + Air and Azusa was created. They were quite different to what I had expected. They have a lot of different elements in their music that I can’t quite explain, so I would suggest to just give them a listen in case you’re interested. I personally didn’t like their music but all the members did a great job at performing, especially the singer. You could tell how much she’s feeling the music.

Time had come for The Contortionist to play. The Indiana-based prog metal band started their set with "Clairvoyant" which is a pretty chill song, so it was only fitting for them to chose "Flourish" as the second song, which is way heavier. It definitely showed their two sides perfectly. The setlist included various songs of their album "Language" and one of the new ones called "Early Grave", which is an absolute masterpiece and it was one of my favorite songs that I heard live that night. It was truly beautiful. I liked The Contortionist before but after seeing them live, you have no choice but to like them even more. I can’t wait to see them again, hopefully soon!
