Live Coverage || Dropkick Murphys @ Gazi Music Hall, 3/6/2019

Dropkick Murphys returned to Athens for the third time on June 3rd and the event was nothing less than any diehard fan would expect. The Boston outfit performed in front of over 3000 maniacs who made them feel like home from the second they stepped on stage, but let's take it from the top.

Frank Turner opened the night with an acoustic set. Although the British songwriter is widely known abroad, he unfortunately didn't really have a large audience in Greece so, by the time his performance started, the venue wasn't full yet. In his 45-minute set, he even performed a song in Greek -and let's be factual, his Greek was a lot better than many actual Greek singers- and did his best despite only having a few people singing along to his songs.

Dropkick Murphys cut straight to the chase with "The Boys Are Back" and the packed venue followed their lead. Vocalists Ken Casey and Al Barr spent the majority of the set singing on the barricade, while a riot was erupting in the frenzied crowd. These guys are experienced entertainers and kept pumping the kids who eagerly responded to their call, moshing and crowdsurfing and not skipping a beat as they sang at the top of their lungs. The band was tight and energetic throughout the set, performing a successful selection of fan-favorite hits, igniting big, vibrant singalongs. Although they were celebrating 20 years since Al Barr joined the band, the setlist surprisingly didn't evolve around "The Gang's All Here". In the last couple of songs, fans joined the band on stage for the grand finale, dancing around as confetti rained. Dropkick Muprhys went out in style (pun absolutely intended) with a cover of "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" by AC/DC. Overall the night was magical and the show utterly insane! The Boston crew came, saw and conquered Athens once more, and hopefully they will return for round 4 very soon.
