Having witnessed Northlane destroy a sold out Vainstream Rockfest earlier this year, and after the release of the majestic album, "Mesmer", I was determined to catch them at a club show in their full potential.
Melbourne's own, Ocean Grove, went on stage at around 20:30. The quintet put on a lovely show, getting more and more kids to participate, as they warmed up to the band. The band has never been my cup of tea musically, but I do recognize the work they've put on into growing as musicians. (7)
Invent Animate took the stage by storm. Heavy metalcore at it's best, with a fully dynamic performance that truly caught the crowd's attention. (8)
Erra was next. The american act managed to get more people involved (did I see a greek flag waving in the pit?), as they unleashed their polished, in-your-face djenty progressive core. I definitely didn't see it coming. (8)
Time had come for Northlane to tear the stage apart. Kicking off with a hair-raising "Colourwave", the band had most kids singing along from the first lyrics. If there's one word to describe their performance, it has to be "passion". Marcus Bridge has always been confident in his vocal abilities but over the last few years he has grown into a well-rounded and captivating performer. I find truly amazing how expressive the band becomes once they members get lost in the music, especially when it comes to guitarist Jon Deiley and bassist Alex Milovic, and how they've grown as musicians. Similarly, drummer Nic Pettersen has stepped up his game to the point where he looks super cool while being a restless beast. The setlist revolved mainly around "Mesmer", with a few bold references to older material. A little over an hour on stage, the band closed the performance with "Paragon" as the encore. Fantastic.
