Epica recently embarked on the Ultimate Principle tour along with Anneke van Giersbergen's new band, Vuur, and Myrath. Yours truly had the chance to catch one of the last show of the tour and reported back.

Myrath from Tunisia started the set with a belly-dancer who introduced the band in the best way possible. The band had a very dynamic presence; with a vocalist on point, fully sustaining his notes, they gave a beautiful twist on modern metal. (7)
Vuur was enchanting from the second they got on stage. Anneke van Giersbergen was at the top of her game, as she kept swinging between the mic and her guitar. The radiating chemistry of the band only added to the performance which revolved around their latest album, "In This Moment We Are Free - Cities". The choice of "Strange Machines" to close the performance added extra points of awesomeness. (8.5)

Having seen Epica one too many times over the years, I know they are a force to be reckoned with. In the past few years, the band did noticeably step up their game when it came to live shows, ensuring that they offered the best and most memorable spectacle to their fans -and this was exactly the case. Kicking off with "Edge Of The Blade" and "Unleashed", they managed to set the mood for the party really fast. Lead singer Simone Simons has evolved into an incredible performer; not once failing to hit a note even while practically doing cardio, she proved she is an undeniable queen of the scene. On this run, the band also introduced the title track of their latest full length, "The Holographic Principle", which sounds even more majestic live. On "Storm The Sorrow", Epica invited Anneke on stage. Her voice mixes very well with Simone's, rendering this one of the best duets this song has ever seen. The first song of the encore, "Sancta Terra", found the guys literally all over the venue; guitarists Mark Jansen and Issaac Delahaye sprinted out of the stage door and mingled with the crowd while keyboardist Coen Jansen was found crowdsurfing from the barricade. Good times. "Consign To Oblivion" was the beautiful epilogue of a truly memorable show. This one was hands down my favorite Epica show ever, and definitely one for the books. (10)
