Counterparts released a brilliant album a few months ago and the month of November found them returning to Europe for a headlining tour along with Polar and Napoleon, before embarking on a consecutive tour supporting The Amity Affliction..
Napoleon was up first. Generic and unoriginal metalcore with pop-punky clean vocals which got just 7 kids playing along the vocalist's antics and occasionally singing along. Next. (4)
This time last year, Polar was opening for Never Say Die Tour and not many people knew about them. This time, however, the band had the crowd's full attention. Taking the stage with "Blood For Blood", the band was truly compelling. Vocalist Adam "Woody" Woodford invited kids to sing along and go crazy -and with a setlist consisting of hits off of their latest album ("King Of Kings", "Tidal Waves And Hurricanes", "Deus Ex machine", "Downfall"), older material ("Glasscutter", "Black Days") and the brand new single, "Breathe", it would be rude if we refused to. The band was confident, moving erratically throughout their set, eventually getting more people to participate. (8)
As soon as Counterparts stepped on stage and the intro started, the crowd went nuts. Holy. Shit. The fans almost brought the house down, moshing, stagediving and singing along, on occasion even climbing on vocalist Brendan Murphy to grab the mic. Murphy himself is a cool frontman who owns the stage and doesn't bother to have a macho-hardcore-dude façade like many other vocalists. What was really noteworthy was the chemistry between the current lineup of Counterparts. Guitarist Blake Hardman, however, stole the spotlight with his intense stage presence and crowdsurfing while playing. The band was blessed with a good sound which only accentuated the intricate details of their music. The energy-packed setlist was ideal to blow off steam, while screaming along the final lines of "The Disconnect" sounded liberating, almost cathartic. The band returned on stage to perform "Compass" for the encore. (9)
